Shavuot

(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

On June 9, the Jewish holiday Shavuot was celebrated. Shavuot (lit. “Weeks”) is a Jewish holiday that occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan (late May or early June). Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses and the Israelites at Mount Sinai. It is one of the shalosh regalim, the three Biblical pilgrimage festivals.

Shavuot is also connected to the season of the grain harvest in Israel. In ancient times, the grain harvest lasted seven weeks and was a season of gladness. It began with the harvesting of the barley during Passover and ended with the harvesting of the wheat at Shavuot.

Shavuot was also the first day on which individuals could bring the Bikkurim (first fruits) to the Temple in Jerusalem. The Bikkurim were brought from the Seven Species for which the Land of Israel is praised: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates (Deut. 8:8). Today, symbolic ceremonies of bringing the first fruits are held in Israel in Shavuot.

Israel's 60th Independence Day – 2008

Israel Independence Day is celebrated annually, according to the Hebrew calendar, on 5 Iyar, the anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel. As this date fell this year on the Sabbath, celebrations have been moved up to Thursday, May 8 (3 Iyar).

The day preceding this celebration (Yom Hazikaron, Remembrance Day) is devoted to the memory of those who gave their lives for the achievement of the country's independence and its continued existence.

On Remembrance Day, the entire nation remembers its debt and expresses eternal gratitude to its sons and daughters who gave their lives for the achievement of the country's independence and its continued existence. It is a day of collective and personal anguish mingled with awe and honor for the fallen.

Israel's 60th Independence Day celebrations commenced on the evening of May 7. The state flag was raised to full mast at a national ceremony on Mount Herzl, at which twelve torches were lit.

The events and projects for Israel's 60th anniversary reflected the Government resolution that they will center around the "strengthening of Israel's children".

The Israel at 60 events were designed to reach all the citizens of Israel wherever they may be, and a major proportion of the events were held in outlying regions.

 Population of Israel: 7,282,000

On the eve of Independence Day 2007, the Central Bureau of Statistics announced that the population of Israel has reached 7,282,000- 132,000 more than last year.

Upon the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the population numbered just 806,000.

- Jews 5,499,000 (75.5%)

- Arabs - 1,461,000 (20.1%)

- Others - 322,000 (4.4%)

Over three million people have immigrated to Israel since 1948, more than one million of them since 1990; approximately 18,000 immigrated in the past year.

The Art of Hebrew Script Exhibition

The Embassy of Israel in Yangon presented an Exhibition named “The Art of Hebrew Script” about Jewish Manuscripts and Ceremonial Objects.

All the items in the exhibition feature Hebrew letters or inscriptions and are either associated with religious customs or used as ceremonial objects in the home or the synagogue. The inscriptions, in addition to their decorative and artistic value, serve as historical documentation. On display are various types of script, written by both trained scribes and folk artists; each type is characteristic of the Jews in a specific part of the world.

This Exhibition is part of the 60th Independence Day of Israel’s celebration.

It was displayed between 30th March – 8th April, 2008 at Beik Thano Art Gallery, Yangon.

The Golan Heights Winery vineyards climb from the Sea of Galilee to snow-capped Mount Hermon near Israel's border with Lebanon and Syria. A picturesque region of rolling hills, waterfalls, and gorges, the Golan Heights is perhaps best known as the contentious area Israel captured from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967—territory still claimed by Syria today.

However, the Golan Heights Winery has added an unexpected business significance to this 460-square-mile rocky plateau. Established in 1983, the winery is credited with remaking the Israeli wine industry and slowly transforming Israel's reputation as a maker of unexciting, syrupy kosher brands to a producer of world-class, award-winning wines that appeal to sophisticated international consumers.
